Housing Services

OpenDoors recognizes that finding affordable housing can be one of the biggest obstacles faced by formerly incarcerated individuals. Our housing program is designed to complement other services provided through our Resource Center, including financial literacy, employment, computer classes, and support groups.

Housing Preparedness

OpenDoors offers a two-day comprehensive Housing Preparedness Program designed to help clients learn some of the skills they will need to know to find and maintain stable housing. While all sessions are voluntary, we strongly recommend that individuals attend both sessions.

Permanent Supportive Housing

With support from the Corporation for Supportive Housing, OpenDoors has purchased a building in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Providence to be converted to subsidized 'green' housing units. Upon completion, the mixed-use building will provide permanent housing for clients, as well as program and office space. OpenDoors has secured two EPA grants for environmental remediation of the site, a commitment from the Neighborhood Opportunities Program for operating subsidies,  full support of the City of Providence for the project, and Section 8 rent subsidy vouchers from the Providence Housing Authority. Construction on the project has begun, and the program is scheduled to be completed in May 2011. Once completed, the building will provide 19 supportive units and will be the only supportive housing in RI specifically for formerly incarcerated individuals.
